3Doodler Alive! (Personification)

Time Required: Two 45-60 minute sessions

Recommended Grades: 3rd to 5th

In this lesson, students will explore personification, creating concrete examples of personification with everyday classroom objects, some imagination and the 3Doodler!

  • write a poem incorporating personification.

  • use the 3Doodler to personify a classroom object, e.g., compass, pencil, scissors, ruler, etc.

Materials

Students will need
  • 3Doodler (1 per group)

  • pencil (1 per student)

  • scrap paper (1 per student)

  • Prepare a table with random classroom objects, e.g., compass, pencil, scissors, ruler, etc.

Lesson Plan

Instructions

Step 1

List these nouns and verbs on the board: moon, wind, curtains, flower, AND danced, smiled, bowed, howled. Students match up nouns and verbs to create personifications. Discuss.

Step 2

(Optional: Share the art of 3D illustrator, Victor Nunez )

Share the goal: Personify classroom objects with the 3Doodler and write a related short poem.

Step 3

Brainstorm and record a list of classroom objects, e.g., ruler, glue, compass, protractor, scissors, etc.

Step 4

Sketch 3 possible ideas on scrap paper. Place an object on the paper. "What living thing does this compass look like?"
Example: A compass: The body and long legs of a dancer. Use a pencil to sketch around the compass on paper to add the top of the dancer's torso, arms, neck and head. Try 3 different objects and ideas.

Step 5

Create a Stencil: Draw a stencil for the chosen personification (i.e. compass dancer) on paper. The stencil will be the outline of the doodled part you will add to your object.

Step 6

Using the 3Doodler, trace over and fill in the pencil outline.
Allow a minute or two to harden. Peel plastic filament off the paper. Weld to object using warm dots of 3Doodler filament.

Step 7

Write a short 2-4 line poem about the personified object with related actions.

Example: The compass twirls and pirouettes on a fine pencil point.

Step 8

Hand out pencils, scrap paper and allow students to experiment with various objects on table before selecting one idea.

Step 9

Circle to guide, assist and assess as students work on sketches, 3Doodling and poetry.

Wrap Up

Students share doodled objects and poems with the class. Discuss how their doodled additions brought their objects to life. Create a 3Doodler "Live Objects Gallery" for peers from other classrooms to visit. Share on Twitter at #3DoodlerEdu

Assessment

Review students' 3Doodled objects and poetry to assess level of comprehension.

Possible Extensions

  • Students write a narrative with a sequenced set of related actions for personified objects. Example: Write a dance routine for the compass ballerina. What does she do first? Next? Last?

  • Students animate personified objects against a green screen or app like PuppetPals HD.

  • Turn personifications into similes and/or metaphors. Example: The compass twirled like a graceful ballerina. The compass was a graceful ballerina.
